A total of 100 students have been awarded scholarships to train as professional accountants.
The scholarships were awarded at a special ceremony held at the Central Auditorium of the Maldives National University (MNU) by Minister of Higher Education, Labour and Skills Development Dr Ali Haidar Ahmed. The ceremony was attended by officials of the Ministry and the Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Haidar said one of the most important objectives of the Ministry is to build local capacity in the fields traditionally dominated by foreign workers.
"Building people in areas that we have long relied on foreigners to fill is an investment for the future,” the Minister said.
In his speech, the Minister also noted that although the government provided a significant number of scholarship opportunities in recent years, only a few students successfully complete the course. He urged all scholarship recipients to see their studies through to the end.
The scholarship recipients said that these scholarships are beneficial and will lead to many opportunities for their professional futures.
The Institute of Chartered Accountants of the Maldives will provide technical assistance to the scholarship recipients. According to the Institute, over 500 similar scholarship opportunities have been offered in the accounting field in recent years, including this year’s opportunities.
