President Inaugurates State-of-the-Art Surgical Wing at IGMH

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has officially inaugurated the new Multi-Speciality Surgical Wing at Indira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
Following the inauguration, the President toured the facility and inquired about the services provided. The President was accompanied by Abdulla Nazim Ibrahim, the Minister of Health, Dr Abdul Azeez Yoosuf, the Chairperson of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals' Governing Board, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, the CEO of the Male’ City Group of Hospitals, Dr Mohamed Waheed, Assistant Medical Director and Head of the Department of Surgery, and Mariyam Shifa, the Director General of Nursing.
 
The newly inaugurated 75-bed facility will accommodate patients requiring general, neurological, plastic, orthopaedic, and urological surgeries. With the addition of the Multi-Speciality Surgical Wing, the total bed capacity of IGMH has now increased to 510 beds.
According to IGMH, the wing has been purposefully designed to provide high-quality services. The wing includes a surgical specialty High Dependency Unit (HDU), a step-down unit, a surgical general unit, an orthopedic postoperative care unit and a general orthopedic unit.
The general ward comprises 44 beds, with an additional 15 beds in the High Dependency Unit. In addition, a 14-room private ward is also available, along with a dedicated two-bed unit for burn treatment. The wing also features 28 toilets and six nursing stations. IGMH said the new surgical wing is expected to significantly enhance the hospital’s capacity and service quality.
With the new multi-specialty surgical wing, the health services provided by IGMH will be further expanded. Expected improvements include:
* Enhanced quality of care with state-of-the-art facilities
* Reduced waiting times for surgical procedures
* Expansion of specialised treatment services
* Improved patient primary for surgical patients
* Greater comprehensiveness in service delivery, with multiple surgical services integrated in one location
With these changes, the health sector in the Maldives will improve the quality of services provided to the people, IGMH said.
President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s government has undertaken several efforts to the increase the resources and capacity of the main government hospitals to provide quality health services to the people. As part of these efforts, Dharumavantha Hospital was officially opened on 15 November last year as a tertiary hospital, equipped with modern facilities. In this regard, a brand new National Fertility Centre as well as a hybrid cath lab with neurosurgical, endovascular and interventional radiology services have been established. A dedicated emergency room for children has also been set up.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Male City Group of Hospitals, Abdul Razzaq Haleem, emphasised the priority given by the President to the development of the health sector, particularly highlighting the enhancement of health sector infrastructure within the Male’ area. The CEO presented statistics indicating that 194 beds have been added to IGMH over the past one and a half years. He noted that the President’s efforts in developing the health sector also include a focus on human resource development. He added that necessary permissions have been granted to recruit 411 additional employees for the sector.
