President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has shared a message on the occasion of World Cancer Day.
The President’s message reads as follows:
Quote:
As we celebrate World Cancer Day 2025, we stand united under the powerful theme "United by Unique", highlighting the individuality of each person's cancer journey while emphasising their collective strength.
The Maldives is on track to achieving the global and regional goal of eliminating cervical cancer as a public health concern by 2030. Additionally, the Government is actively working on establishing a specialised cancer facility and expanding palliative care services across the country to ensure accessibility to comprehensive care.
Currently, through Primary Health Care, both at island and atoll levels, screening is available for 5 common cancers. Efforts are also underway to establish specialised screening facilities, which will further support the implementation of these programmes, that will also be expanded to the urban healthcare facilities.
In our steadfast efforts to combat possible cancer contributors, the recent ban on electronic cigarettes and the strengthening of tobacco control legislation and policies, including free cessation services demonstrates our unwavering dedication to safeguard our people from potential cancer risk factors.
On this day, I honour the memory of the loved ones we have lost to this cause, as well as applaud the spirit and resilience of those that are fighting this difficult journey every day. I also express my sincere gratitude to healthcare professionals, NGOs, international partners, advocates, and our community as a whole, who tirelessly work to make a difference.
Together, through collective action and shared responsibility, we are building a future where prevention, early detection, and equitable access to care defines our success.
I reaffirm the commitment of the Government in working together to fight cancer and to create a healthier, resilient, and a happier nation.
