Economic Minister Mohamed Saeed said on Tuesday night that the People’s National Congress (PNC) administration has never abused the supermajority it currently holds in the Parliament.
He made the remarks at the opening of PNC’s campaign office for West Maafannu constituency for the upcoming Local Council Election.
Addressing the event, Saeed said that the PNC’s sweeping victory in the 2024 Parliamentary Elections demonstrate the people’s faith in President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu’s pledges.
“It is clear to everyone who thinks fairly what he did when he got the Parliament, that there has been no misuse of this power during the short span of time that has passed. All of you can be certain that each and every law, all work, was to establish peace and security in the Maldives, if you were to assess everything fairly,” he said.
Saeed said that anyone who thinks for themselves and not through party lenses will realize the incumbent administration came to power to address major social issues affecting the country.
He went on to praise Inguraidhoo MP Ibrahim Falah, the leader of PNC’s parliamentary group.
“Certainly, you will always find our PG leader with a smile on his face, if you were to meet him, or cast a secretive glance at him he walks down a street. You will never see any worry or distress from his face,” said Saeed.
He also praised PNC’s candidate for Male’ City mayor, former defense minister Moosa Ali Jaleel, describing him as someone who is always ready for anything.
“I have never seen such interest and such attentiveness in working with the President to deliver his pledges to the people. And I don’t think I ever will in this country,” he said.
Despite Saeed’s ascertain that the PNC has never misused its supermajority in the Parliament, the party is often criticized by the opposition for rubber-stamping government bills and decisions, including the move to write anti-defection provisions into the constitution.
