President Yameen Abdul Gayoom has said that the government will propose to the parliament again, that the majority of the 1,500 flats provided by the Chinese government should be constructed in Hulhumale’.
President Yameen said this while speaking at a rally of Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) to inaugurate the campaign for Abdulla Rifau, its candidate for Maafannu South constituency in the upcoming Parliamentary Election.
“We have earlier pushed for placing most of the 1,500 flats provided by the Chinese government in Hulhumale’. This issue has been sent to parliament by the new government as well. It’s been dismissed after three debates. Now we’re doubtful if we’ll even get this assistance from the Chinese government,” he said.
President Yameen said that if the PPM candidate wins the election for Maafannu Dhekunu, this issue will be submitted by him to the 18th Parliament.
He highlighted that PPM gave priority in its election manifesto to youth and housing.
“Hulhumale’ needs to be developed as a youth village, to ensure housing, jobs, sports, and economic opportunities for youth. This is why we want to connect Male’ and Hulhumale’ by a bridge,” he said.
