Had info on two assassination plots against Nasheed: ex-Police intel head
He made the statement in the committee meeting held on January 9, in response to a question by Baarah constituency MP Mohamed Shifaz whether the police had received any information of an assassination attempt on the ex-President. In this regard, he said that about 10 officials from the armed forces had provided the police with information that such a plot was being planned at a power demonstration at Raalhugandu area by the armed forces in 2010 and another incident where rumors of hazardous chemical being stored at a storage facility owned by a Parliament member. “The chemical was to be used in some kind of an assassination plot.” When asked to name the Parliament member, Hameed said that it was Eydhafushi constituency MP Ahmed ‘Red Wave’ Saleem. “The purpose of this was to assassinate the then President Mohamed Nasheed. However we could not substantiate this information. Nonetheless we carried out discussions with the Special Protection Unit as precautionary measures,” he said. Hameed said that the police stepped up the security protocol on Nasheed by carrying out individual security assessments on the police officers assigned to his security detail while on his tours to the islands. Hameed further noted that the police are not authorized to investigate the armed forces. However the police had investigated and interviewed the 10 military officers who provided the information on orders of the then Defence Minister Tholhath Ibrahim Kaleyfaanu, he added. While the agenda of the closed door meeting held at the research committee was made available on the Parliament website, audio recordings of the meeting were publicized at the Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally on Wednesday night. However, the Counsel General of the Parliament on Thursday stated that such statements from officials summoned to committees can only be publicized upon being passed by the Parliament floor in accordance with the Parliament rules of procedure.
