State employment opportunities for PWDs reflect commitment to upholding human dignity: First Lady

First Lady Sajidha Mohamed has stated that providing State employment opportunities for persons with disabilities demonstrates a strong commitment to upholding human dignity.
She made this statement while addressing the inaugural ceremony of the “Fahi Programme”, an initiative by Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) to facilitate employment opportunities for persons with disabilities.
She highlighted that by creating employment opportunities through such programmes, the prioritisation of human dignity is affirmed, demonstrating in practice that all Maldivians are equal. She described this as a remedy for the grievances and suffering of many Maldivian citizens.
The First Lady observed that throughout history, persons with disabilities have made significant contributions to human development and the progress of nations. She emphasised the need for society’s perception of persons with disabilities to change, noting that they should be treated with respect, provided with appropriate support, and afforded the opportunity to lead dignified lives in which they are empowered to be self-sufficient.
The Fahi Programme falls under this Administration’s policy to create employment opportunities for persons with disabilities, providing them with a means to generate income. At today’s ceremony, the First Lady handed over appointment letters to the 30 individuals selected for positions at Maldives Ports Limited (MPL) under this programme.
The accessibility feature of the company’s website was also officially inaugurated by the Minister of Social and Family Development, Dr Aishath Shiham, at the ceremony.
In addition, a commemorative gift was presented to the First Lady by Maldives Ports Limited in recognition of her commitment to inclusivity and empowerment. The gift was handed to her by the Chief Executive Officer, DCP (Retired) Mohamed Rishwan.
