Judicial Service Commission has decided to forward the name of High Court Chief Judge Hussain Shaheed to the President as their nomination for the post of Supreme Court judge.
A post of Supreme Court judge became vacant following the resignation of HusnuSuood. JSC announced the vacancy twice, receiving applications from Shaheed, former Deputy Prosecutor General Mariyam Nihayath and lawyer Rusdhullah Ibrahim.
After conducting interviews with the applicants, JSC has decided to nominate Shaheed for the post.
One the name is nominated to the President, he will then forward it to parliament for approval.
Shaheed was appointed as a High Court judge on July 24, 2018. He was then made Chief Judge of High Court on October 26, 2023. He previously worked as Legal Officer of the Criminal Court, Magistrate of Feydhoo, and as a Criminal Court Judge.
At present, the Supreme Court bench consists of Chief Justice Ahmed Muhthasim Adnan, Judge Dr Azmiralda Zahir, Judge Aisha Shujune Mohamed, Judge Mahaz Ali Zahir, Judge Ali Rasheed Hussain and Judge Dr Mohamed Ibrahim. Judges Azmiralda and Mahaz are currently on suspension while disciplinary investigations are being conducted against them.
