Kaashidhoo MP Abdullah Jabir has been elected as the chair of the temporary committee assembled to probe the alleged illegal activities of former President Mohamed’s Nasheed’s government.
The resolution to probe Nasheed’s alleged illegal activities was initiated and submitted by Jabir.
The first meeting of the seven-member committee was held this morning, during which the Chairperson and Deputy Chairperson were elected.
Vilimaafannu MP Ahmed Nihan Hussain Manik was elected as the Deputy Chairperson of the committee.
Jabir told Sun Online today that the committee will expedite its investigation, and that its meetings will be kept confidential.
In addition to Jabir and Nihan, the committee is made up of Thoddoo MP Ali Waheed, Fares-Maathoda MP Ibrahim Mutthalib, Guraidhoo MP Ibrahim Riza, Vilufushi MP Riyaz Rasheed, and Kin’bidhoo MP Moosa Zameer.
Jabir’s resolution alleges Nasheed of threatening and influencing the judicial institutions, locking up the Supreme Court, issuing illegal orders which were in conflict with court rulings, and issuing orders to carry out illegal activities against Judges.
In addition, it accuses the former President and Commander-in-Chief of issuing illegal orders to arrest several Members of Parliament, of making illegal use of the government budget, of disregarding the equality of citizens and prioritising the needs of persons with a certain political view, and of encouraging hostility and anger in the society.
