The Government of Maldives will facilitate former President Nasheed’s foreign lawyers to visit him at the Maafushi Prison Facility، Foreign Ministry has stated، on behalf of the Government.
The visit will take place this week، and is facilitated on the request of President Nasheed’s lawyers، Foreign Ministry said on a press statement.
“The Maldives Correctional Services will ensure that the proper environment and facilities are provided for the lawyers to communicate with President Nasheed.”
Meanwhile، member of Nasheed’s foreign lawyers’ team، Amal Clooney has arrived in Maldives this afternoon، with Jared Genser.
Nasheed’s Office informs that Amal and Jared arrived in Maldives to hold meetings with former President Nasheed’s lawyers and heads of the government، about the 13 year jail sentence on Nasheed on terror charges. Their trip is also in relation with the presentation of President Nasheed’s sentencing issue to U.N’s Working Group on Arbitrary Detention.
According to Nasheed’s Office، Amal Clooney and Jared Genser will be working in Maldives until the 10th of this month.
They have now requested to meet with the government and head officials.
The international lawyers have requested to meet with President Yameen، Vice President Ahmed Adheeb، Home Minister Umar Naseer، Foreign Minister Dunya Maumoon and PG Muhthaaz Muhsin.
Informants say that a letter has been sent to the Home Minister requesting to meet with Nasheed in prison.
