'Nasheed's failure not pres Yameen's fault', says govt MP

Former president Mohamed Nasheed's failure to ensure the same kind of development orchestrated by incumbent president Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom in his three year tenure is not by any means, president Yameen's fault, a top government lawmaker insisted Thursday.
Speaking during a ruling party rally held Thursday to award the party tickets to candidates contesting the upcoming local council elections, Naifaru MP Ahmed Shiyam noted that president Yameen was continuously working to ensure economic independence in the archipelago.
The billion dollar foreign investments flowing into the country was testament to the hard work president Yameen has put in to establish stability and investor friendly environment in the country.
"The economic progress we're witnessing today is because an economic expert is at the helm. We're seeing tall buildings rising up to the sky and introduction of new services. All that are signs that we're becoming economically independent and our nation is stable," Shiyam said.
Shiyam also pointed that only 100 resorts had been opened in the 40 years since the country introduced tourism to its shores. But with opening of over 20 resorts in the past three years, the government is likely to meet its 50 resort target in its term, he added.
