MNDF does not have a mandate to arrest people: Defence Minister
Countering the allegations made by Nasheed, Nazim detailed that arresting people for various offences was included in the mandate of the police; hence the military would not get involved in such matters. “I always operate within the constitutional laws of this nation. I will not do anything that violates the laws governing this country. If and when an order to arrest political figures is issued, I will no longer remain in this position,” Nazim who had served in the military for two decades said. Nazim further said that he would never condone the unconstitutional arrests of Jumhoory Party leader and Maamigili constituency MP Gasim Ibrahim and Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) Parliamentary Group leader and Mulak constituency MP Abdulla Yamin during Nasheed’s administration. Speaking during Nasheed’s Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) rally held last night to mark the International Workers Day, the former President said that what worried him most was that the people who instigated the ‘coup’ might attempt to complete their heinous work. It has happened in some countries, Nasheed added. “…Nazim might attempt to complete the ‘coup’. He will then want to arrest Abdulla Yamin, me, even Thasmeen Ali and all other political figures. That is to establish his rule. This is what we need to worry about most” Nasheed said. Nasheed also stressed that the country must not let the government be turned over to military rule.
