United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention (UNWGAD) has called to immediately release the former president Mohamed Nasheed، sentenced to 13 years in prison on terror charges for abducting criminal court sitting chief judge in 2012.
Publicizing the report following Nasheed’s complaint filed in the group، UNWGAD stated to release Nasheed and to compensate Nasheed as under International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
The report by WGAD has been shared with Nasheed’s international lawyers team.
In the report، WGAD noted that former president is being held captive unlawfully، reflecting on the laws constituted under Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR) and International Convention on Civil and Political Rights (ICCPR).
The group had shared the report to the Maldives government on 17 September. The complaint was filed in the group on behalf of Nasheed on 30 April.
Maldives Government had stated that it cannot accept the rulings by the UNWGAD.
