FIFA President Gianni Infantino’s landmark first visit to the Maldives, was marked by a vibrant football festival and a star-studded exhibition match at the National Football Stadium in the capital Male’ on Friday.
Infantino's visit, extended at the invitation of Football Association of Maldives (FAM) President Ahmed Thoriq, highlights a renewed focus on nurturing football in the island nation.
The late afternoon’s festivities saw President Dr Mohamed Muizzu in attendance, accompanied by Vice President Hussain Mohamed Latheef, several government ministers, and a robust representation of FAM officials and the local football community. The event celebrated grassroots football, showcasing promising young players from Maldivian football academies and clubs through a series of engaging matches and a showcase of skills.
A particular highlight was a special exhibition football match that brought together an eclectic mix of participants.
President Dr Muizzu and the Vice President graced the pitch alongside Italian FIFA World Cup winner Marco Materazzi and revered Maldivian football legends. FIFA President Infantino also joined the fray, leading his team to a spirited 6-4 victory, much to the delight of the spectators.
Beyond the festivities, FIFA President Infantino held extensive discussions with President Dr Muizzu, addressing critical issues pertaining to the development and future growth of football in the Maldives. This inaugural visit is anticipated to foster stronger ties and pave the way for increased support and investment in Maldivian football.
