President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has revealed Ministry of Economic Development and Trade has closed 56 foreign-run businesses so far as part of efforts to curb illegal business operations. The President made the remarks while addressing residents of Hulhumale’ Phase II during a community meeting.
He stated that the issue of illegal expatriates is a growing concern and remains a major issue raised by the public. The President noted that 56 foreign-operated businesses have been shut down over the past three weeks as part of ongoing enforcement efforts.
President Muizzu said further measures are underway to address the issue, adding that the government is working to improve the situation in line with the expectations of the public.
To address the widespread issue of illegal foreign-run businesses, a special task force named the National Task Force on Combating Illegal Expatriate Operations and Businesses has been established. The task force comprises the Ministry of Economic Development and Trade, the Ministry of Homeland Security and Technology, and enforcement agencies including the Maldives Police Service and Maldives Immigration.
Authorities said the task force is actively investigating suspected illegal businesses across the Maldives and taking action to suspend or shut down operations found to be in violation of the law.
