Meaningful national progress can only be achieved through self-discipline and resolve: President

President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has stated that while development is now visibly unfolding across the country and will continue with momentum, true progress depends on more than physical transformation; it requires a deep, personal commitment to self-improvement and character building.
He made these remarks during his address at the official Independence Day ceremony held this morning at Maldives Centre for Social Education (MCSE), celebrating 60 years since the Maldives gained independence.
Underscoring that meaningful national development begins within each individual, the President said progress will remain superficial unless Maldivians embrace who they are, take pride in their identity, honour the sacrifices of national heroes, and give precedence to the Dhivehi language, faith, and national values.
He reflected on the significance of independence, describing it as a hard-won legacy built on the courage, sincerity, and patriotism of generations past. Preserving that legacy, he said, is a shared responsibility, one that falls on the shoulders of every Maldivian today.
The President expressed confidence that, by standing together in defence of the nation’s independence and by working to pass it on, the people can ensure a strong and sovereign future. He said this truth must be acknowledged with conviction, not doubt.
He went on to highlight that there is no substitute for national unity and no shortcut to sustaining independence, only through nurturing a sincere love for the nation can this be achieved.
While reaffirming that the Government’s central policy is to develop Maldivians, the President noted that although assistance from others may be welcomed when needed, the work that truly matters must be led by Maldivians themselves. He added that maintaining strong international ties remains important, provided those relationships serve the interests of the Maldivian people.
Calling for collective resolve, the President urged the nation to move forward with purpose and unity, stating that a country can only stand strong when its people are guided by shared values and a deep-rooted sense of patriotism.
He further reassured the public that the Government remains steadfast in its mission to advance the nation and will continue to work tirelessly, with sincerity and dedication, to honour its promises.
