President Mohamed Nasheed has today created a new government authority by the name of Maldives Land and Survey Authority.
The President Nasheed created Maldives Land and Survey Authority under the discretion conferred on him by Article 116 of the Maldives Constitution, and according to the President’s Office, the new office was established with the consultation of the Cabinet of Ministers. The new office would run under the Ministry of Housing and Environment.
President’s Office said that Maldives Land and Survey Authority was created in order to bring all the work, currently being done by various unrelated authorities, to assess the land and seas of the Maldives and collect information on the resources contained in them under one roof. The President’s Office said that with the new office all such land assessment and information gathering would be done by the new office, which will supply the necessary information to all government offices, authorities and institutions.
“Strengthening the maintenance and use of Maldivian land with optimum efficiency for the benefits of the people and the state, to set up cadastral survey measures and principles, to establish a national geographic information system and maintain an information database, to map the Maldivian land area and correct those maps, and other such work need to be done by one and the same office”, said the President’s Office. These works, previously by a number of various institutions will now be done by the new office.
