President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has announced that individuals previously allocated land plots in the Greater Malé Area under Government housing schemes will soon have the opportunity to apply for housing units, subject to specific conditions. The announcement was made during a press briefing held at the President's Office today.
Addressing the challenges faced by some recipients of the Binveriya scheme, the President noted that many allottees lack the financial capacity to develop their plots. He stated that upon receiving a housing unit, recipients will have the option to relinquish their land plot in exchange. He further clarified that any plots returned under this arrangement would be redistributed fairly — either to the next highest-scoring applicants from previous schemes or through a newly established process.
In addition to the new housing options, the President assured that the Housing Development Corporation (HDC) is prioritising road development and the installation of water, sewerage, and electricity services in Hulhumalé where plots have been allocated.
Furthermore, the President affirmed that for the first time in Maldivian history, thousands of citizens will receive both flats and land on reclaimed ground within a single presidential term, through the housing projects being carried out under this Administration.
President Dr Muizzu noted that the Bank of Maldives (BML) Affordable Housing Project is expected to be completed by July 2028, with all housing units occupied by that time. He also stated that the current scheme of approximately 8,000 flats is intended to be finalised within this term, adding that all atoll housing projects — including those carried out with foreign assistance — would likewise be completed within the current Administration's mandate.
