A large number of police have been deployed to the streets of the Maldivian capital as the law enforcement agency launched ‘Operation Riveli’ – a special operation conducted annually to combat an uptick in crime during the New Year holidays.
The operation kicked off at 03:00 pm on Wednesday and will continue through January 2.
The police have said that a large number of officers have been deployed to the streets for the operation, with vehicle checkpoints set up across the Male’ area to question individuals and search vehicles.
According to the police, the main focus of the operation is to stop thefts and robberies, and as well as drug and alcohol-related crimes.
The police said they will also be monitoring for motorists who drive around with modified silencers, and will be stopping and taking action against anyone who violates community standards.
The operation is being conducted not just in the Male’ area, but also in nearby islands and resorts.
