According to the Ministry of Agriculture and Animal Welfare, 37 shipments of plants have been imported illegally so far in 2025.
The ministry on Monday, May 5, shared statistics of plants imported to the Maldives from January until now.
From January until April, Maldives imported 3,869,648 types of plants and plant-parts as per statistics, which is a total of 405 shipments out of which 37 had been imported in violation of regulations.
The 37 illegal shipments comprised of 4,732 types of plants and plant-parts, the ministry added.
The ministry further added that documentations of two out of these shipments have been shared with them, which is a total of 324 plants and plant-parts.
As for the remaining 35 illegally imported shipments, the ministry said it disposed them in accordance with the relevant regulations, which is a total of 4,408 plants and plant-parts.
The ministry urged importers to adhere to the laws and regulations related to importing plants and plant-parts to the Maldives.
