Maldives condemns 'sabotage attacks' off UAE territorial waters

Maldives government has condemned the act of sabotage which targeted four ships near the territorial waters of the United Arab Emirates, (UAE).
A statement released by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MFA) reads that the Maldives “unequivocally” condemns the act of sabotage which were targeted at the commercial and civilian vessels near east of Fujairah, in the Gulf of Oman on Sunday.
The ministry reaffirmed Maldives solidarity with UAE in its dedication to safeguard the security and interests in its territorial waters.
Denouncing every such act which threatens the stability, safety and security of maritime navigation, Maldives government urged the international community to assume its responsibility to guarantee the security of the maritime navigation.
The ministry also urged to confront all the attempts to undermine international peace and security.
International media reported that four commercial ships were targeted for the sabotage attack off the UAE on Sunday.
Citing the country’s Foreign Ministry, BBC News reported that the incident had not caused any casualties, however, Saudi Arabia had confirmed that two of their oil tankers had sustained severe damages.
The two other ships were reportedly registered in Norwegian and UAE-flagged respectively.
While BBC reported that Iran called for a full investigation, Al Jazeera cited an anonymous US official to have said that initial investigations into the attack “suggest” that Iran had a hand in the explosions off the UAE coast.
