The currently in-development new international cargo terminal at Velana International Airport draws close to completion with the conclusion of its entire structure works.
According to the international airport’s managing Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL) the entire structure of the new cargo terminal has been completed with roofs installed as well.
The new cargo terminal’s project has been handed to Beijing Urban Construction Group (BUCG) for a project total of USD373 million (approximately MVR5.7 billion). Reports indicate the terminal is spacious enough to store 12,000 metric ton of cargo.
The terminal is one among several other developmental projects carried at the VIA as a means to transform the country’s gateway to international waters as a modern and advanced airport.
In addition to the development of the cargo terminal, Velana International Airport’s entire development project includes a new seaplane terminal which will improve sea plane docking room while a new passenger terminal is also under development.
The total VIA development project is estimated at USD800 million (approximately MVR12.3 billion) or above.
The new passenger terminal’s construction and development has been contracted to Saudi’s Binladin Group while the new 3,400 meter-long runway was developed by BUCG.
