Abdul Aleem, the Secretary General appointed to ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) by Former President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom’s faction, arrived at the Civil Court on Monday with MVR 85,000 in small change to pay his fine over contempt of court.
Aleem is convicted of violating the order by the Civil Court to hand over PPM’s control from its now ousted leader, Former President Maumoon, to its advisor, President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom. The court’s verdict read that Aleem had challenged the order with his actions, which include conducting meetings from Former President Maumoon’s faction in the name of PPM’s disciplinary committee and council to remove two lawmakers from the party.
The Civil Court’s verdict ordered Aleem to pay a penalty of MVR 85,000 within ten days. He arrived at the Civil Court on Monday with several bags of coins amounting to his penalty. He was accompanied by Ahmed Nadeem, the husband of Former President Maumoon’s daughter, Yumna Maumoon.
The Civil Court has not disclosed yet whether Aleem’s hefty penalty paid in coins will be accepted.
