Meedhoo family concerned over 22-year-old’s atheistic beliefs
MALE, August 22 (HNS) – A family in Meedhoo of Addu City is concerned over their sister publicly denying the existence of God and renouncing Islam. The 22-year-old’s mother said she has been advised several times after she told her relatives, friends and some people of the island that she did not believe in the religion of Islam. “She’s claiming that she doesn’t believe in the existence of God and that she doesn’t believe in Islam either. She’s also refusing to listen to any advice,” she said. “She has been exposing her beliefs to the people in the island as well. I’m concerned about the matter and I’ve always been crying over the matter lately. Her sisters have been psychologically affected.” The woman’s mother said her daughter, who is in house arrest for out-of-wedlock birth, is completely sane. She used to offer the obligatory prayers when she was employed in a resort, she added. “Back then she would pray regularly. She didn’t make such claims.” The mother, however, expressed hope that her daughter will revert to Islam if referred to a counsellor.
