Gov’t Aiming for Uninterrupted Power Supply During Ramadan

Government is working hard to ensure uninterrupted power supply during the Holy month of Ramadan, Minister of Tourism and Environment, Thoriq Ibrahim has said.
After touring the temporary generator installation site by the State Electric Company Limited (STELCO) in Hulhumale’, Minister Thoriq admitted that a lot more work needs to be done to further expand the existing power plants in Hulhumale’. Despite the challenges, the aim is to provide uninterrupted electricity service during Ramadan, he said.
"The aim is to ensure that there are no power outages during Ramadan. So STELCO, Fenaka and MWSC [Male’ Water and Sewerage Company] are working to increase capacity in the areas where they supply electricity. So it is a major task,” Minister Thoriq said while thanking the utility providers for their efforts.
The Minister also urged the public to economise power usage especially during Ramadan.
He pointed to the growing power demand in the Male’ region over the years, adding that while the temporary powerhouse will provide an immediate relief, the government is working towards a more sustainable solution.
To cater to the expected surge in demand during Ramadan, STELCO has decided to bring in 13 new generator sets to increase electricity capacity in the Male’ region. STELCO said the new generator sets will increase the electricity generation capacity to about 20 Megawatts which it said will allow the company to cater to the surge in demand during Ramadan.
