Decommissioned Dornier Aircrafts to Create New Dive Wreck Site in Kaafu Kudagiri Lagoon

In an exciting new project aimed at boosting the Maldives' tourism sector, two decommissioned Air Maldives Dornier aircrafts are set to be submerged in Kaafu Kudagiri Lagoon. This initiative, which is a collaboration between the Housing Development Corporation (HDC), the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC), and the Maldives Transport and Contracting Company (MTCC), will create a new dive wreck site that promises to enhance the region’s appeal as a prime recreational destination.
The project is currently in its preparatory stages, with work underway to clear the designated area for the aircraft submersion. Once completed, the dive site will offer divers a unique opportunity to explore the sunken aircrafts, while contributing to the region’s marine biodiversity. The wrecks are expected to provide a habitat for marine life, creating a vibrant ecosystem that will attract divers from around the world.
An Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) report for the project has been released, highlighting potential risks associated with the aircraft submersion. These include safety concerns for workers and seafarers involved in the operation. In response, the report recommends implementing comprehensive training programs and precautionary safety measures to minimize the risks during the operation.
The new dive wreck site is expected to attract both local and international divers, further diversifying marine-based activities in the country. The initiative aligns with the Maldives’ ongoing efforts to expand its tourism offerings and provide visitors with unique and memorable experiences, especially within the country's renowned underwater attractions.
With its potential to boost the Maldives' reputation as a premier diving destination, this project is a significant step forward in the development of sustainable tourism practices while enhancing the local marine ecosystem.
