A fire broke out at the landfill in Kulhudhuffushi City around 11:00 late Sunday morning, sending thick black smoke billowing across the area.
A video circulating on social media shows flames engulfing parts of the garbage dump, with smoke blanketing the surroundings.
Kulhudhuffushi Island Council’s Secretary General Abdulla Adam told Sun that WAMCO had alerted the council about the incident.
“There is a lot of fire in different areas now and a lot of smoke,” Adam said.
He confirmed that the Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) and Kulhudhuffushi Airport Fire and Rescue are working to extinguish the fire. Police, staff from Kulhudhuffushi Regional Hospital, and the Red Crescent are also assisting on site.
WAMCO site manager Mohamed Gasim said the fire began spreading after employees at the site were unable to contain it. He added that the situation is now under control and efforts to fully extinguish the fire are ongoing.
Neither the police nor the MNDF have issued further details about the incident.
