New VIA Terminal Will Be Key to Achieving Maldives’ Tourism Goals: Shiuree

The Chief Executive Officer and Managing Director of the Maldives Marketing and Public Relations Corporation (MMPRC/Visit Maldives), Mr. Ibrahim Shiuree, has stated that the upcoming passenger terminal at Velana International Airport (VIA) will play a vital role in advancing the Maldives’ tourism objectives.
Speaking in a video presentation series organized by Maldives Airports Company Limited (MACL), Mr. Shiuree described the new terminal as a transformational infrastructure development that will significantly expand the country's capacity to welcome international travellers.
“The new terminal will open up many avenues for the economy and tourism. It is essential for achieving and surpassing milestones such as the two million tourist arrivals recorded last year,” he said.
Highlighting that the terminal will deliver globally competitive, enhanced travel experiences, Mr. Shiuree noted that this project will further bolster the Maldives’ image as a world-leading destination.
The terminal is scheduled to be inaugurated on July 26, coinciding with the 60th anniversary of the Maldives’ independence. President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu is expected to preside over the ceremony. Mr. Shiuree praised the President’s personal involvement in expediting the project, noting the frequent directives issued to MACL to ensure timely completion.
He also extended appreciation to MACL’s management and staff, stating:
"MACL’s dedication has been instrumental in delivering this critical national project. Their efforts will be remembered for years to come."
VIA, as the Maldives' primary international gateway, plays a central role in the country’s tourism sector. MMPRC continues to collaborate with MACL and industry stakeholders to improve service quality and enhance visitor experience at the airport.
