President Muizzu Reaffirms Commitment to a Healthy, Secure Maldives on World Drug Day

President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu has reaffirmed the government’s commitment to making the Maldives a healthy and secure nation, aligning with global efforts to combat drug abuse and illicit trafficking.
In a message shared on X to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking (June 26), President Muizzu stressed the importance of identifying the root causes of drug addiction and the trade surrounding it.
“These issues require globally coordinated measures. The Maldives has achieved significant progress through a national framework that includes law enforcement, protection, treatment, and community reintegration,” the President stated. “Today, I reaffirm the government’s strong commitment to assist in international efforts against these dangerous challenges and to make the Maldives an increasingly healthy and secure nation.”
The United Nations General Assembly designated June 26 as World Drug Day in 1987 to strengthen global action and cooperation toward a drug-free society. This year’s theme—“Justice, Education, Health Care and Livelihood Resources are the Foundations of Sustainable Resilience”, emphasises investing in prevention and breaking the cycle of organized crime and drug trafficking.
The 2025 campaign, titled "Break the Cycle. #StopOrganizedCrime", urges long-term, coordinated actions that promote justice, education, and strong community support systems to fight the drug epidemic effectively.
