A Bangladeshi kitchen helper who sustained serious injuries in a fight with his colleague in the kitchen of a café in Male’ City on Tuesday is being treated in the Intensive Care Unit, according to the Indhira Gandhi Memorial Hospital (IGMH).
The incident, which took place in a café located on Maaveyo Magu, was reported to the police at around 12:10 pm on Tuesday.
According to the police, the fight took place between the café’s cook – a Nepalese male – and a kitchen helper – a Bangladeshi male.
Both sustained injuries in the incident and were taken to the IGMH.
A spokesperson from the IGMH told Sun on Wednesday that the Bangladeshi man remains in serious condition and is being treated in the hospital’s ICU.
Meanwhile, the Nepalese man, who sustained less serious injuries, has been moved to a ward.
The spokesperson declined to provide details regarding their injuries, but said that it “appear to be inflicted with a sharp instrument.”
Videos of the incident show the two men, who are both bleeding, wrestling with each other on the kitchen floor. A third man is seen intervening to remove a knife from one of them.
The case is under investigation by the police.
A similar incident in April 2022 resulted in the death of a young Bangladeshi waiter. The tragedy took place at a café in Hulhumale’. The café’s chef, a Pakistani national, is awaiting trial for the murder.
