President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu on Saturday said that some fisheries reforms will take time, as they must align with the pace of economic development.
Speaking at the Fisherman’s Forum held in R. Dhuvaafaru to mark Fishermen’s Day, the President met directly with fishermen to discuss sector priorities and development needs.
“Some things take a lot of time because they have to be done with the economy in mind,” he said, adding that foreign-aided projects are also delayed due to procedural requirements.

The President emphasized that the government is committed to delivering progress on both its manifesto and the specific requests raised by fishermen. He assured that their concerns would not be ignored, and that their input is central to shaping fisheries policy.
His remarks come amid ongoing protests by fishermen, who have accused the government of failing to deliver on key promises. Several individuals were arrested during the demonstrations, including Kendhoo MP Mauroof Zakir, whose release has been demanded by the opposition MDP.
