In a significant step toward bolstering scientific research and climate resilience, the Maldives National University (MNU) and Driftwood Maldives Pvt Ltd have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) focused on oceanic, environmental, and climate change research.
The agreement was formalized at a ceremony held today at the MNU Auditorium, with Vice Chancellor Dr Aishath Shehnaz Adam signing on behalf of MNU and Driftwood Maldives Managing Director Assad Ali representing the company.
The partnership aims to enhance research capacity and provide practical training opportunities for MNU’s Masters and PhD students, who will gain access to research centres and equipment at tourist resort facilities, including Hyatt brand properties.
This collaboration is expected to strengthen ties between the education and tourism sectors, enabling data-driven scientific studies crucial for a nation highly vulnerable to climate change. Findings from the research will contribute to building a climate-resilient Maldives, supporting national and global sustainability goals.
MNU, already engaged with organisations like Maldives Resilient Reefs, Reef Scapers, and the Olive Ridley Project, continues to prioritise hands-on student research through strategic partnerships with local and international institutions, marine labs, and eco-initiatives.
