Police didn't commit inhumane acts on Feb 8: Defence Minister

Speaking at DhiFM “One to One” program, Minister Nazim said that the date would be marked as a day that the opposition Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) carried out an “offense” which caused a lot of destruction to the infrastructure in many islands and reversed our development by 20 years. Despite Minister Nazim’s statement, the Police Integrity Commission (PIC) had admitted to the Parliament’s committee that the PIC believes that the Police had “assaulted” MDP protesters. Nazim said that February 8 is a day in which part of the truth had been wiped off people’s memories and that the reality is that top MDP officials had been behind the acts of violence carried out in Addu and other islands. Nazim also accused that it had been a day on which a group of people acting upon MDP’s guidance, torched Addu atoll’s history. He added that it was a day on which the archives had been destroyed even in other islands. Defence Minister Nazim said that the fire set to the court houses in the atolls destroyed housing registries and marriage registries. Furthermore he said that the police stations had been vandalized and the destruction cost millions, but added that the travesty is being forgotten. He further stated that the people who got injured during the clashes, was due to their confrontations with the police. He said that the events of the day are currently being probed and that those who sustained injuries did not simply receive them by being at home, but rather by confronting the police. He said that there were some unprecedented acts from the police nevertheless he believes that neither the police nor the security forces are at fault. Nazim further stated that actions of former President Mohamed Nasheed had led to the events and that Nasheed should take sole responsibility for it.
