Police send extortion case against ex-JSC member for prosecution

The five suspects include Mohamed ‘Reynis’ Saleem, the former presidential representative at the judicial watchdog, Azlif Rauf from Male, Mohamed Hamid from Addu Atoll Hithadhoo, Ubaidulla Saeed from Haa Alifu Atoll Dhidhoo and Abdulla Unais from Male. “The PG was requested to level charges against the five suspects for their alleged involvement in the extortion of two persons, who owed them money, over the course of several days and robbing a motorcycle from the two until they made the payment. The suspects also broke into the office of the two victims and vandalised their property,” the police said. Police had asked the Criminal Court to issue a warrant for Saleem’s arrest but the request was rejected citing that there were no grounds for such an order. The appeal of the lower court’s decision was also dismissed by the High Court on the same grounds. Saleem was sacked from his post on June 20 due to the criminal investigation. He, however, denies the accusations. Azlif, who is accused of plotting to kill former Ungoofaru MP Dr Afrasheem Ali, was dismissed from the army after the police arrested him.
