In a rally held by MDP to mark the International Workers Day on May 1, Nasheed said that Nazim and Riyaz will be arrested by the police and Maldives National Defence Force (MNDF) officers. “You should not be concerned. Traitor Nazim and traitor Riyaz will be arrested. It will be done. Do not worry. Police and MNDF will do that for us” Nasheed said speaking at the protest held in front of Medhuziyaaraiy last night. Nasheed said that what worried him most is that the people who instigated the ‘coup’ might attempt to complete their heinous work. It has happened in some countries, Nasheed added. “…Nazim might attempt to complete the ‘coup’. He will then want to arrest Abdulla Yamin, me, even Thasmeen Ali and all other political figures. That is to establish his rule. This is what we need to worry about most” Nasheed said. We should not let our government be turned over to military rule, and that “is not something that can be done as long as there’s pulse within our bodies” Nasheed said stressing that he would fight against it till his last breath. “I get hurt when I’m hit. I get frightened when people charge furiously towards me. I feel sad when I’m left in the cell for extended periods of time. I am distressed when I have to spend time away from my family. But we cannot let our efforts fade. I will not stand down” Nasheed said. He claimed that the ‘coup’ was carried out by a few members of the security forces who had been bribed by some rich businessmen who would ensure that the ‘coup’ is sustained. Nasheed also indirectly indicated that Nazim, Riyaz and Chief of Defence Force Ahmed Shiyam might have taken bribes for the ‘coup’. “Police and MNDF are people who do a lot of hard work. Even if their leaders, Abdulla Riyaz, Nazim and Shiyam had sold the institution by taking bribes, we, as citizens and as a responsible political party cannot declare that their services to the nation as worthless” Nasheed added. He said that MDP government had planned to provide flats to the police, military, doctors, nurses and ordinary citizens alike.
