Lawmaker of Dhidhdhoo constituency Abdul Latheef Mohamed left the ruling Progressive Party of Maldives (PPM) on Tuesday.
In a letter he sent June 19 to President Abdulla Yameen, who is the advisor of PPM, the prominent lawmaker stated that he cannot comply with every whip line PPM issues for parliament votes. Thus, he declared that he is leaving the ruling party.
MP Latheef highlighted that, as a member of PPM’s parliamentary group, he has voted in accordance with the party’s whip lines to date. However, he said that he does not believe that all the decisions were taken in the best interests of the youth and people of the country.
Latheef is notably one of ten PPM lawmakers who gave their signatures to the joint opposition’s resolution to seek a motion of no confidence against Parliament Speaker Abdulla Maseeh.
