An agreement has been signed with Saudi Arabian company Al-Rajhi to finance the development of the Hulhumalé Grand Mosque, Minister of Islamic Affairs Dr Mohamed Shaheem Ali Saeed has announced.
The agreement was signed during the minister’s visit to Medina, according to a message shared with the media.
Islamic Minister Dr Shaheem said the project will proceed in line with President Dr Mohamed Muizzu’s Presidential Address, with practical work scheduled to begin on 13 September 2026, marking the 900th anniversary of the Maldives embracing Islam.
The mosque will be constructed between Hulhumalé Phase Two and Phase Three and is expected to accommodate approximately 10,000 worshippers. The Islamic ministry said the concept design has been finalised, with detailed design work currently underway in collaboration with international experts.
The project will be developed as a comprehensive complex, including surrounding grounds, a commercial building and parking facilities. A Qur’an museum will also be established as part of the development. Al-Rajhi will fully fund the initiative, covering both design and construction.
The ministry added that a delegation from the company is expected to attend the groundbreaking ceremony when construction formally begins.
