President of China Xi Jinping and First Lady Madam Peng Liyuan have arrived in the Maldives this afternoon on a state visit.
The Chinese President and First Lady were greeted on arrival at Ibrahim Nasir International Airport, by President Yameen and Madam Fathimath Ibrahim.
The visit is being made at the invitation of President Abdulla Yameen Abdul Gayoom.
In an article published on Sun Online this morning, Chinese President Xi Jinping wrote, “The ship of China-Maldives friendship has set sail. I am confident that with our joint efforts, it will brave winds and waves and forge ahead toward an even brighter future.”
President Xi is the first Chinese Head of State to conduct a state visit to the Maldives.
