Transport and Environment Ministry partner to procure electric taxis

Ministry of Transport and Civil Aviation, in collaboration with the Ministry of Tourism and Environment, has signed an agreement to procure environmentally friendly electric taxis.
The initiative is part of the government’s efforts to promote sustainable urban transport and reduce the environmental impact of road traffic.
Transport Minister Mohamed Ameen and Environment Minister Thoriq Ibrahim signed the agreement under the Integrated Sustainable and Low Emissions Transport Project, which is funded by the Global Environment Facility (GEF).
The project aims to cut down emissions, ease road congestion, and provide eco-friendly transport options for residents in Male' City.
As part of this initiative, financial assistance will be provided to support the establishment of electric taxis and charging stations. The Ministry of Transport said that encouraging the use of electric vehicles will help reduce air pollution and noise levels, creating a cleaner and safer city.
he electric taxis introduced through this project will provide an environmentally friendly transportation service to the public.
The government has also signed an agreement with MTCC to introduce a government-owned taxi line. The service will be launched in three phases. In the first phase, set for this year, taxis will begin operating in Male', Hulhumale', and Velana International Airport.
The second phase, planned for 2025-2027, will see the service expand to Villimale and Thilafushi. The third phase, scheduled for 2028-2029, will introduce the service to Rasmale’, Giraavaru, Addu City, Fuvahmulah City, and Kulhudhuffushi.
This initiative marks a significant step towards sustainable transport in the Maldives. By investing in electric taxis and expanding green transportation networks, the government aims to create a cleaner, more efficient urban transport system that benefits both residents and the environment.
