Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naveen Appointed Acting Commissioner of Police Following Shujau’s Resignation

Deputy Commissioner of Police Ismail Naveen has been appointed to temporarily assume the responsibilities of Acting Commissioner of Police, following the removal of Deputy Commissioner Mohamed Farhad from the role.
Earlier last night, after Police Commissioner Ali Shujau’s resignation, Deputy Commissioner Farhad Fikury was initially appointed to lead the Maldives Police Service on a temporary basis. However, the decision was quickly reversed.
Home Minister Ali Ihsan announced that given the police’s highest current priority—the investigation into the incident involving Yumna, who was found fallen from the ninth floor of a building—Deputy Commissioner Naveen, who is heading that investigation, has been entrusted with leading the institution.
“Since the police institution’s highest priority at present is the ongoing investigation, and Deputy Commissioner Ismail Naveen is leading this investigation, I have appointed him to temporarily carry out the responsibilities of Commissioner until a permanent appointment is made,” Minister Ihsan stated.
Commissioner Shujau resigned last night amid mounting public criticism over the police’s handling of Yumna’s case.
