MWSC Targets Year-End Completion for Water and Sewerage Projects Nationwide

Abdul Matheen Mohamed, Managing Director of the Maldives Water and Sewerage Company (MWSC), has announced that all ongoing water and sewerage projects across the country are slated for completion by the end of 2025. The assurance came during an interview on PSM News’ “Raajje Miadhu” programme, where Matheen outlined the company’s ambitious timeline to enhance water and sanitation infrastructure in the Maldives.
Matheen highlighted that the current administration, which assumed office in November 2023, had already completed several stalled water and sewerage projects in 2024. Building on this progress, he revealed plans to establish water and sewerage systems in 20 additional islands in 2025. Some of these initiatives have already commenced construction, while others remain in the design phase. He clarified that projects still being designed are expected to conclude by mid-2026, though the primary goal remains to finalize all ongoing works by December 2025.
“To reduce costs, the government has opted to assign such projects to State-owned enterprises like MWSC rather than commercial contractors,” Matheen explained, emphasizing a strategic shift aimed at efficiency and fiscal responsibility. This approach aligns with broader governmental objectives to prioritize public utility development.
MWSC’s target to wrap up these projects by year’s end reflects a concerted push to deliver reliable water and sanitation services, addressing long-standing infrastructure challenges in the archipelago.
