Maldives Green Tax revenue soars by 108 percent in 2025

The Maldives Inland Revenue Authority (MIRA) has reported a dramatic 108 percent increase in green tax revenue in 2025, driven by rising tourist numbers and rate adjustments.
The eco-levy, imposed on visitors to fund environmental initiatives, generated USD145.9 million last year—more than double the USD 70 million collected in 2024.
Starting 1 January 2025, the government doubled green tax rates from USD 6 to USD 12 per adult in resorts and from USD 3 to USD 6 for tourists at guesthouses and hotels. Children under the age of two are exempted. The final figure also well exceeded revenue forecasts with the Budget Position Report 2025 projecting a 95.2 percent revenue surge last year, estimating USD 62.5 million in green tax collections
The boost was also driven by record tourism, with 2.25 million visitors in 2025—the highest in Maldivian history. As the nation prioritises sustainability, the green tax’s expanded revenue is expected to bolster climate resilience and eco-friendly projects across the archipelago.
