Changes planned for school sports competitions

Minister of Youth Empowerment, Sports and Fitness, Abdulla Rafiu has said the government encourages sports competitions among school students.
The minister said the Sports Ministry is discussing possible changes to how inter-school tournaments are organised.
A recent internal memo by the Ministry of Education, Higher Education and Skills Development limits under-14 participation to students from Grade 7 onwards, raising concerns.
Speaking at a press conference held at the President’s Office, Minister Rafiu acknowledged that various sports associations have expressed objections to the change. The minister assured that their concerns will be addressed.
According to the minister, meetings are planned between the Sports Ministry, Education Ministry, and associations to resolve the issue. These meetings will focus on discussions such as which age groups will participate in festival-style events and which age groups will compete tournament-style at a competitive level, the number of participants, etc.
The minister said the changes will emphasise talent development, and spoke on the importance of allowing children to try different sports, identifying talent early, and providing more opportunities in areas where students show potential.
The minister reiterated that the government aims to ensure school sports competitions go ahead, with necessary adjustments made collaboratively.
