In a significant move to strengthen international ties and expand its aviation network, the Maldives and Ethiopia have officially signed a bilateral agreement to establish direct air services.
The signing ceremony was held at the Ministry of Tourism and Civil Aviation, marking a new chapter in diplomatic and economic relations between the two nations.
The agreement was signed by the Minister of Tourism and Civil Aviation, Mohamed Ameen, and the Director General of the Ethiopian Civil Aviation Authority, Yohannes Abera. This pact formalises the framework for scheduled flight operations, providing a legal basis for airlines from both countries to facilitate air connectivity.
Speaking at the ceremony, Minister Ameen highlighted the strategic importance of the African market, noting that Ethiopia is now the sixth African nation to sign an air transport agreement with the Maldives, following Egypt, Mauritius, Rwanda, Seychelles, and South Africa.
"This agreement will facilitate the launch of direct scheduled flights between our two nations. It comes at an opportune time, as Ethiopian Airlines—the largest and fastest-growing airline in Africa—has already expressed a strong interest in launching direct flights from Addis Ababa to the Maldives,” he said.
The Minister further emphasised that the agreement aligns with the ambitious economic vision of President Dr Mohamed Muizzu. The administration is focused on building a sustainable air transport industry that can withstand international aviation and economic shifts. By connecting the Maldives to major global hubs, the government aims to drive tourism growth and broaden the nation’s economic horizons, he added.
The agreement is expected to be mutually beneficial, opening the door for the Maldives' national carrier, Maldivian, to operate flights to Ethiopia, while allowing Ethiopian Airlines to bring its extensive global network to Maldivian shores.
The Minister expressed belief that this partnership will significantly enhance the Maldives' position as a premier global destination and foster long-term economic prosperity through improved air connectivity.
