President Dr. Mohamed Muizzu says that one of the biggest goals of his administration is to modernize and expand the fisheries sector, and create more opportunities for local fishermen.
He made the remark in a message on X on Wednesday morning on occasion of Fishermen’s Day.
In his message, President Muizzu noted that the Maldivian people have been practicing fishing dating back to the country’s first inhabitants.
He noted that the ocean has remained the main source of food for the Maldivian people since then.
He described fishing not just as a vital source of food, but also a proud Maldivian vocation that showcases the hard work and skills of the Maldivian people, and is deeply linked to the country’s culture and traditions.
“One of the biggest goals of the administration is to further expand the fisheries sector, expand products, and increase the income of fishing families. To boost benefits from fisheries to the country’s economy. To further modernize fisheries and facilitate greater opportunities for fishermen,” he said.

President Muizzu concluded his message by conveying Fishermen’s Day greetings to everyone working in the fisheries sector as well as their families.
The Fishermen’s Day is observed in the Maldives annually on December 10. This year, the country is marking its 45th Fishermen’s Day.
While President Muizzu assures fishermen that his administration remains committed to developing the fisheries sector, many fishermen, especially those engaged in yellowfin tuna fisheries, continue to express concern that the challenges they face haven’t been properly addressed.
