President Dr Mohamed Muizzu has appointed Mohamed Shafeeg Mahmood as the Vice President of the Human Rights Commission of the Maldives (HRCM).
Shafeeg’s appointment follows the expiry of commission member Moomina Waheed’s term and was made in accordance with Section 8 of the Human Rights Commission Act.
The President nominated Shafeeg for the post, and the Parliament’s Human Rights and Gender Committee reviewed the nomination and confirmed his eligibility for the post. Following a vote in the Parliament, Shafeeg was officially appointed, with 67 members voting in his favour.
