Thila Uthuru Fishing Race in Kelaa Opens for Participation

The Kelaa Council of Haa Alifu Atoll yesterday opened the opportunity to participate in the “Thila Uthuru Fishing Race 2025,” which is being held to mark Fishermen’s Day in Haa Alifu Atoll.
This fishing race is a tournament organized jointly by the Haa Alifu Atoll Council and the Kelaa Council to celebrate Fishermen’s Day in the atoll. The race is scheduled to be held in Kelaa.
In the announcement made by the Kelaa Council regarding this event, it was stated that participation is open for the Thila Uthuru Fishing Race, which is being held to mark Haa Alifu Atoll Fishermen’s Day.
The fishing race will take place on Wednesday, December 10, 2025. This is a special tournament for those involved in the fisheries sector of the atoll.
The deadline for submitting application forms for participation in the tournament is 14:00 on December 01, 2025. The Council stated that application forms for participation will be available at the Kelaa Council reception. Furthermore, arrangements have been made for completed forms to be emailed to [email protected].

The Kelaa Council informs that the objective of holding this fishing race is to strengthen camaraderie among the fishermen of Haa Alifu Atoll and to encourage the fisheries sector.
How the Race Will Proceed
The fishing race is scheduled to proceed at 14:30 on Wednesday, December 10, 2025.
The vessels participating in the fishing race are scheduled to depart from the harbor.
The teams participating in the fishing race are scheduled to depart at 14:30, and the designated time to return to the harbor after fishing is 20:30. Teams arriving after 20:30 will be disqualified from the tournament.
Team Participation in the Race
The number of members in the participating teams must be a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 10 members.
Teams participating in the fishing race must be present at the harbor 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time.
No participant whose name is not on the team list will be allowed to participate with that team.
The final date for making changes to the team list is before 14:00 on December 7, 2025.
It has been decided that the first-place team in this tournament will receive MVR 20,000, the second-place team MVR 15,000, and the third-place team MVR 10,000. Additionally, MVR 2,500 will be awarded to the person who catches the heaviest fish.
The fish caught by the participants of this fishing race must be a species permitted for fishing by the Ministry of Fisheries. The rules of the tournament state that the participating teams must consist of a minimum of 3 members and a maximum of 10 members.
