Maldives Parliament approves non-resident envoys to Cuba, Mexico and Brazil

The Parliament has formally approved the appointment of non-resident ambassadors to the Republic of Cuba, the Federative Republic of Brazil, and the United Mexican States.
The decision, proposed by the President, received broad parliamentary support, reinforcing the Maldives' commitment to strengthening its diplomatic ties across the Americas.
Following a thorough review and a favourable report from the Parliamentary Foreign Relations Committee, the legislative body moved to a vote on each appointment.
Abdul Ghafoor Mohamed, the Maldivian Ambassador to the United States, was approved as the Non-Resident Ambassador to Cuba with 57 votes in favour. Concurrently, Dr Ali Naseer Mohammed, the nation’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, was appointed Non-Resident Ambassador to Brazil, receiving 58 votes of approval.
Additionally, the Parliament endorsed the appointment of Shiruzimath Sameer as the Non-Resident Ambassador to Mexico, a motion that passed with 56 votes in favour. This strategic move designates experienced diplomats, who are already serving in core overseas postings, to represent Maldivian interests in these additional nations concurrently.
The appointments are made in accordance with the provisions of the Foreign Service Act, which mandates parliamentary approval for the accreditation of ambassadors.
