Govt in talks to make power more affordable, says home minister

In an attempt the make utilities more accessible to citizens throughout Maldives, the government is currently in discussion with various power suppliers to make electricity more affordable, home minister Ahmed Azleen has revealed.
In a seminar held for managers of powerhouses across the country, the home minister said that president Abdullah Yameen Abdul Gayoom is taking a special initiative to reduce electricity prices across Maldives. The government is currently holding discussions with local, and global power suppliers to find a solution to the wavering electricity prices, Azleen said.
“The citizens have very high expectations from the state-owned utility companies. However, realise that our facilities need further development to meet these expectations and standards. We are working tirelessly to meet these standards from all utility companies, and our goal is to make these necessities affordable for all Maldivian citizens,” the minister said.
Home minister Azleen also highlighted on the importance of looking in to renewable energy sources in order to make electricity more affordable. In this light, he said that Maldives can largely benefit from renewable energy sources such as solar power and wind power, as the hike in electricity prices is caused by the fluctuations in the global market of oil.
The State Electric Company (STELCO) is hosting the seminar for managers of the powerhouses after a 10-year hiatus. The seminar will hold discussions about the usual problems faced by powerhouses in the islands and ways to solve these problems systematically.
