MDP welcomes the statement by China refuting the establishment of Military Facility

Maldivian Democratic Party has welcomed the recent statement of China refuting the claims of MDP Leader Mohamed Nasheed regarding the establishment of a Chinese military facility in Laamu Atoll.
Former President Mohamed Nasheed made his allegation during his trip in Abu Dhabi stating that Maldives Government has given an island from Laamu Atoll to China for 99 years in return of Rf. 2 billion Dollar investment. The island ‘sold’ for China would be used to establish a military facility، Nasheed alleged.
He further said in his allegation that establishment of such a facility would tarnish the relationship of Maldives with the neighbouring countries.
On the statement released by the Party، MDP noted that in December 2011، the Chinese Defense Ministry announced in Seychelles that its naval fleet may seek supplies or recuperate at appropriate harbours in Seychelles or other countries as needed during escort missions.
The statement of MDP further read، “It is with this backdrop in mind that MDP expressed concern about the recent bilateral deliberations between the Governments of Maldives and China on the possible establishment of such a supply or a recuperate facility in Laamu Atoll.”
Chinese Embassy said on their statement، that Chinese military policies are strictly practiced within the country and establishing an overseas facility is not in their interest. They further said their ties with other countries are built on mutual interests، peace and development of both the countries.
